Adwords Tutorial - Discover 4 Easy-To-Use Adwords Tips

I'm going to say something that may surprise you right now...

This adwords tutorial is probably a waste of your time. There... I said it. I know it sounds crazy, I'm not a guy who likes to waste peoples time. So why would I write the tutorial in the first place?

Well you notice that I said "probably".

Google adwords has definitely got its place. It really shines on a carefully crafted page which you already know is profitable. In this case, send as much adwords traffic to it as possible. You're onto a winner!

But chances are you don't have this yet.

Lets face it, it's a time consuming job getting people to do what you want on your webpage...There's lots of experimentation involved.

And if you're paying for traffic during this time, your money is going straight down the drain...not the best idea for a small business is it?

I have always found that it's better to get FREE listings at google. Yes it takes longer, but then you can do all the experimentation you like without the risk.

In the rest of this article, i'll assume that you have already got a page that you KNOW converts. If not, I recommend you check out our article on small business seo. It will help you drive some traffic to your page so you can begin the free experimentation.

Google adwords tutorial - How to improve your google adwords performance...

1. Understand Googles Goal

Googles goal with adwords is to serve the most relevant ads to their customers. There are a few ways they measure how relevant an ad is.

  1. CTR
  2. Whether the keyword being targetted is in the ad itself.
  3. The relevance of the page that people are being directed to.
  4. + More unknown things which google will never tell you.

These things are all combined into something called Google Quality Score.

The higher your google quality score, the cheaper your advertising will be and the higher your ad will appear on each page. So your goal is now to improve your google quality score.

One strategy people use is to pay the maximum bid for a keyword. This guarantees them a top position, which in turn boosts their CTR (top positions naturally get higher CTR's). After a while, say 4 days, they reduce their bid and manage to retain their position at the top because their ad is view as being more relevant (because it has a higher CTR). Apparently some people have managed to reduce their bids below what they were originally paying while still retaining the top position.

It also helps to use your targetted keyword in your ad. For example, if you're targetting the keyword abdominal training, the title of your ad might read, "Free abdominal training report"...if you're giving away a free report that is.

You can also optimise your landing page for the keyword. ie: Make sure that your titles, meta keywords and meta descriptions, headlines, subheads and content all have your keyword in it. Google will recognize your page as being highly relevant to your ad. This is all stuff we would look at in our SEO services.

2. Play the adwords ads against each other

Another thing I would definitely suggest is creating another advert and testing it against the first one. See which one gives you a higher clickthrough rate. I know that the wording of adverts, especially headlines, can have massive differences to the response rates.

Take for example, The truth about abs, an abdominal training product that we promote. You've probably seen the ads all over the internet.

Interestingly, the second ad gets triple the sales the first one does. Mainly because it doesn't look like an advert. It looks more like part of a testimonial.

3. Use Benefits In Your Adverts

Another thing that always works in advertising is benefits.

Instead of ...

You might try (this was just off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's much better)

minutes a day. Free download

Or something similar... The point is, try something. You'll be able to see which one is performing better through the tracking tools that google adwords gives you.

The best idea is to track for a while until you've got enough data to make a confident decision. Then just stick with the best ad, dump the worst one. Then rinse and repeat.

4. Use specific keywords in your campaign

One more thing you might try is adding more specific keywords to your campaign. Often the more specific keywords have lower cost per click than the more general ones. Take floor sanding for example...

Keyword

Estimated Average CPC ($)

floor refinishing

$2.37

floor sanding

$3.00

professional floor sanding

$0.05

Keep in mind, these lower cost keywords probably don't receive as much traffic, but it's worth getting what you can from them. It will lower your overall costs.
