Small Business SEO Could Be The Pot Of Gold That Your Business Has Been Waiting For...

Small business seo could be the difference between living in any old house, or the house of your dreams... It could be the difference between driving a banged up 1980's Mazda familia your whole life - or cruising around in a brand new Chrysler...

But how can small business seo make such a difference? Well think about this...

Google gets over ten billion searches per month. What sort of effect would even just a small piece of that pie have on your business? My guess is that you'd start to rake in the money...with your big golden rake.

But sadly, that's never going to happen...unless you show up on the first page. It's a fact, that people rarely look past the first page of results. If you're not there, you won't get found.

Now there are lots of ways to "do" small business SEO. But in this article I'm only going to focus on a small portion of it. The "on page" stuff.

That means you're going to learn...

  1. How to select keywords for your site that people are already searching for.
  2. How to use META tags to please humans and search engines.
  3. How to write content that pre-sells your visitors and shows the search engines exactly what your page is about.

Choosing Effective Keywords With The Google Keywords Tool

Google has created a keywords tool which shows you the number of searches made either locally or globally for different terms each month...

This tool is your friend because it helps you figure out the exact terms your potential clients are searching for... You can then create pages using these terms - making them far more likely to get found in the search engines.

Directions On How To Use Google's Keyword Tool

1) Click here to open up a new tab with the Google keyword tool in it...

2) Type in the words or phrases that best describe your business into the 'word or phrase' field... separate each word or phrase by pressing the return key. For example if you ran a website design company in Auckland, New Zealand... Your search words would be something like this:

3) Leave the 'website' field next to the 'word or phrase' field blank.

4) If you want to do a local search - eg - country specific - then choose "advanced options" Pick the country you're from and the language that you want the search results to be in.

5) Leave the other fields as they are and click "search"

6) A list of keyword options will show up...

The ideal keywords are ones that:

7) Go through all the keywords, checking the ones that stand out to you.

8) Export your list by clicking "download" and then "selected"...

Congratulations - you now have a list of effective keywords to help you get targeted traffic!

Remember... Most of your competition has probably never gone as far as this with small business seo... So you're off to a flying start!

Now it's time to go through your keywords and decide on an article/page to write...

Pick one primary keyword - which will be the page name - and 4 others which are also relevant.

How To Write Killer META Tags That Humans And SE's Love

Tom and I own the website www.fitness-training-at-home.com. Through lots of hard work and persistent effort, we have managed to get our "best oblique workout" page ranking at #1, out of 700,000 results. See the picture below...

This page now brings in an additional 3000 vistitors monthly... Which we then monetize through e-book sales and advertising. One of the ways we have achieved this traffic is by clever use of the META tags.

META title and META description tags have 2 purposes.

  1. To tell the search engines what your page is about.
  2. To act as an advertisement for humans.

How to write search engine friendly META tags

To make your titles and descriptions search engine friendly - make sure that you use your PRIMARY KEYWORD once in both the title and description... Look at the image above... best oblique workout was our primary keyword... and it appears in the both the title and description.

Also try keep your title to 64-80 characters in length and your description to 150-200 characters.

How to write human friendly META tags.

Let's say you've been working hard on your small business seo and your page has finally reached the first page of google... What can you do to give your site that added advantage over the other 10 sites that come up on the first page?

You tell your potential clients exactly what they want to hear...in the form of a compelling benefit.

Going back to our best oblique workout example...

People don't want..."This is quite a good oblique workout."

They want... "The best oblique workout for building first class obliques."

Can you see how that is more appealing? Can you see why people want to click on our site? It draws them in by suggesting that they could have FIRST-CLASS obliques... How could they say no to that!?

For the description area - which you can see marked in the image above - you need to give a brief and appealing summary of the awesome info they'll get on your page. The description is the title's little side-kick... working together to guarantee a CLICK.

If you've built your own website using website development software, there should be a field which allows you to add keywords, titles and descriptions... In our specially designed Content Management Systems, we have an easy to fill out field dedicated to these. Click here to learn more about our content management system websites.

Writing Content That Is Search Engine Friendly and Pre Sells

Once you've persuaded people to give you the click - you need to pre-sell them... There are a few important rules for this:

  1. ALWAYS deliver on the promise you made in the title and description (Above) or else you've lost trust right away.
  2. Don't start selling from the word go... Pre-sell gently... Giving them valuable information and relating your products or services to it.
  3. Make your writing style friendly, but professional. Don't write the way you were taught in ponsy Engligh classes - write the way you speak.
  4. NEVER use text language such as:  ur so kwl, OMG, awsm, lol - and so on... Unless, of course, you're in the business of selling makeup to teenage girls!

You Love Stories And So Do Your Potential Customers...

A tried and tested method that I normally use to write articles or pages is to base them around a story. It is human nature to be interested in stories... To want to know what happens next - what's around the corner... So, use this to your advantage.

I have a personal website which is entirely based around my own experiences of eating disorders as a teenager. 95% of it's pages are stories - which lead to a most wanted response. My site is growing rapidly - and although it's only 1 year old it's getting over 250 visitors a day... All thanks to the same seo advice that I'm giving you right now.

There's No Point In Having A Fantastically Written Page, If It Isn't SEO Optimised...

Why? Because nobody will ever see it. Simple.

Here are some MUST-USE tips on getting your pages fit for google:

  1. Name your page using your primary keyword.
  2. Include your primary keyword in the first sentence of your content.
  3. Dot that same primary keyword occasionally throughout your page.
  4. Dot all of your other 4 secondary keywords throughout your content.
  5. Link out of the article (to a page within your site) with the linked text containing your primary keyword.
  6. Keep it real... Don't try to fool google by adding in keywords which match the background colour. Use clean tactics and you will be rewarded.
